Some links regarding white privilege and racism…

June 11, 2008

This weekend (I have a feeling it will be a long time before I address any topic that was not sparked by conversations at Go Run!) we broke out into groups by region to determine the next steps to remain connected once we all returned home.  One of the topics that arose through this discussion was that the Cleveland community is highly divided and racially segregated which tends to cause tensions which often prevent anything from getting done.  Basically, it is all fine and good to talk about women working together to achieve some higher lofty vision on equality, but one cannot ignore that race greatly alters one’s worldview.  For Cleveland particularly we need to acknowledge that the issues affecting the black and white communities are vastly different but nonetheless deserve equal attention.  Further nothing is really going to change until the community at large can unite to work toward the necessary improvements…

But people don’t know how to discuss race, not really… There is a definite lack of safe spaces where people can have these conversations honestly and without judgment.  And most people (I hope) understand that use of racial slurs and so forth are unacceptable, but that doesn’t mean that sometimes we all say downright boneheaded things out of ignorance…

So because other people have examined some of the difficulties underlying the basic discussion much better than I ever could, I provide the following links:
